Dr Faisal Baig

Dr Faisal Baig is a highly experienced Consultant Anaesthetist who provides conscious sedation at Midland Skin.

  • Consultant Anaesthetist
  • MBChB, Birmingham. This is a medical degree and shows I am a doctor.
  • BMedSci. An additional degree in medical science.
  • FRCA. This stands for Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (London) and is awarded to doctors who have passed the College’s specialist examinations in anaesthesia.
  • GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics. This means I have completed all the necessary training and experience to be called a Consultant Anaesthetist.

Training

Dr Baig qualified as a doctor from the University of Birmingham in 2009. He began specialist training in anaesthetics in 2013 and was appointed a consultant in 2021. His training, from medical school to consultant, was completed entirely in the UK.

He is on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics, which is the highest standing for an anaesthetist.

Experience

Dr Baig works full-time as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, anaesthetising patients for major surgery, including major cancer surgery and maternity care. He specialises in assessing and optimising patients before major surgery, so that any medical conditions are well controlled and the anaesthetic is as safe as possible.

Conscious sedation is one of his specialist areas. He has extensive experience of sedating patients for a wide range of procedures across different surgical specialties, including plastic and oculoplastic surgery.

Conscious sedation at Midland Skin

Some skin surgery, plastic surgery, eyelid surgery and laser treatments are more comfortable under sedation. At Midland Skin this is conscious sedation, not a general anaesthetic. You are given carefully controlled medication that makes you relaxed, calm and comfortable, and many people feel pleasantly drowsy, but you stay awake enough to talk to the team and respond throughout. You are not put to sleep and you breathe for yourself. Because the sedation is light, you recover quickly and go home the same day, with the comfort of sedation but without the risks and longer recovery of a general anaesthetic.

Not everyone is suitable for sedation in a clinic setting. Midland Skin applies strict selection criteria so that conscious sedation is only offered to patients for whom it is safe in an outpatient setting.

Before your procedure, Dr Baig meets you, goes through the plan with you and answers your questions. He is known for his natural ability to put patients at ease and his excellent communication skills.

Throughout the procedure, Dr Baig’s only role is to look after you. Your oxygen levels, heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure and breathing are monitored closely and continuously, just as they would be in an operating theatre, and he adjusts the sedation moment by moment so that you stay comfortable and safe. He brings to the clinic the same standards of preparation, monitoring and safety that he applies every day in the NHS.

Additional information

Dr Baig has presented posters on quality improvement in emergency abdominal surgery and on the impact of artificial intelligence in medical education. Beyond anaesthesia, he has a professional interest in wellness and longevity medicine.

Away from work he enjoys travelling, food, gardening and the gym.
